Classroom Teacher

The classroom teacher will provide instruction to students both face-to-face through project-based learning and online. The teacher will be supported by a Campus Director, University Academy Central Office Administrators, Ingenuity Center Professional Development Specialists, and university faculty. The classroom teacher will be expected to participate in daily teaming and project development with all teachers at the campus as well as teachers at other campuses using distance technologies. The classroom teacher will be responsible for curriculum development, lesson planning, communication and outreach, classroom management, integrating multiple technologies, collaborating with colleagues, and integrating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines. Teachers will be expected to participate in graduate level work, and those teachers not currently holding master’s degree will be expected to be enrolled in a program as part of the compensation package. The position will be a 9 month university appointment, predicated on performance, enrollment, and continued successful operations of the charter school.

Other Information 

This position is for 192 days which follow the University Academy District Calendar each school year (varies year-to-year, typically mid-August to early June). This position will have no vacation accrual since summers are off. This position will be paid on a 12-month distribution to have their pay/benefits through the summer. Dependent on start date, the monthly salary may be prorated according to the number of school days remaining (192-day calendar).

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Appropriate grade/subject certification.

Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks

  • Receives student referrals and implements the evaluation process within the required timeline.
  • Selects and administers formal and informal evaluations to determine student eligibility for special education services according to federal and TEA regulations.
  • Completes evaluations, compiles information and generates legally defensible Full and Individual Evaluation reports within required timelines.
  • Assists classroom teachers with the implementation of IEPs.
  • Keeps informed about new state and federal guidelines and policies concerning special education.
  • Keeps Special Ed PEIMS records and Medicaid information current.
  • Confers with parents, teachers, and students/or principals for the purpose of interpretation of evaluation data, instructional procedures, and student progress and behaviors.
  • Facilitates ARD meetings to develop the Individualized Education Program for each student.
     

Required Education/Experience

  • Master's degree 
  • Texas teacher and special education certificate; diagnostician certificate
  • At least three years’ successful experience as a classroom teacher
     

Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

  • Knowledge of current case law related to students with disabilities, strict legal compliance with federal and state mandates
  • Knowledge of the education of special education students, human development, and learning theories
  • Knowledge of characteristics, etiology, and research related to cognitive, language, motor, and social/emotional aspects of emotional behavioral and learning disabilities, including students with autism
  • Knowledge of diagnostic procedures for assessing achievement, intellectual, and behavioral functioning
  • Ability to interpret data
  • Knowledge of prevention and intervention strategies (both academic/cognitive and behavioral)

Major Responsibilities, Duties and Critical Tasks

  • Plan and provide appropriate individual and group therapy to students consistent with speech and language goals contained in individual education plans (IEP).
  • Evaluate student progress and determine readiness for termination of therapy services.
  • Conduct evaluations to assess students with speech or language disorders and conditions to determine eligibility for services within the required timelines.
  • Develop clinical management strategies or procedures and diagnostic statements by interpreting observations or data.
  • Participate in the admission, review, and dismissal committee to assist in interpretation of evaluation data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students with communication disorders or conditions according to district procedures.
  • Lead admission, review, and dismissal (ARD) meetings for students with communication disorders or conditions according to district procedures.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan and implement classroom activities to improve communication skills of students.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents regarding the accomplishment of therapy goals and needs of the students.
  • Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of speech-language pathology services and make changes based on the findings.
  • Complies with policies established by federal and state law, state board of education rule, and the local board of trustees.
  • Keeps informed about new state and federal guidelines and policies.
  • Completes and submits requested reports, evaluation logs, surveys, etc. To the special education coordinator by the specified due date.
  • Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  • Improve leadership skills through self-initiated professional development activities.
  • Perform duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner as defined in the tea code of ethics for educators.
  • Maintains documentation of the time and effort spent towards supporting the program.
  • Provide professional development in assigned schools to help school personnel identify and understand communication deficits in students.
  • Document provision of services in district data management program.
  • Performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as related to the position and as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
  • At least two years of experience in the speech pathology field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with charter school.


Required Certifications/Licenses

  • Valid Texas license as a speech-language pathologist granted by the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR).
  • American speech-language-hearing association (ASHA) certificate of clinical competence in speech-language pathology (CCC-SLP).
